There are a few kinds of exams. Open-competitive exams are open to the general public who meet the requirements — this is how most people enter city service. Promotional exams are limited to current permanent employees moving up within an agency or title series. Education-and-Experience exams (EEE) have no written test; instead DCAS evaluates and scores your education and work history. Some titles also use physical or practical tests. The Notice of Examination (NOE) for each exam tells you the type, the requirements, the fee, and the test format.
