After you complete probation, you hold permanent status in your civil service title. Permanent employees have due-process protections and accrue seniority, which can matter for promotions, shift selection, and — if layoffs ever occur — the order in which positions are affected. Permanent status in a feeder title also makes you eligible for promotional exams that lead to higher titles. Building seniority is how a civil service career grows over time.
